The Genretwist Challenge sign-up post!

Info on the challenge in a previous post here.

You can sign up in the comments to this post, with either 10 or 6 characters with assigned numbers, a genre to twist to (Western, Romance, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror or Crime/Thriller) and an email address (or, if you prefer, permission to send you a private message). You will then be sent a list of ten scenarios to write. You'll finish as many as you like! No deadlines.

More on the scenarios:

The characters will be assigned roles in the scenarios based on their numbers. In any of the genres except Romance there will be a maximum of one scenario with a pre-deemed pairing (though of course you can write more in), and even in that one you get to select one half of the pairing. The Romance genre has a pairing in each prompt. You don't get to select the pairings for the first 8 Romance prompts (so crack aplenty is in store), but the last three scenarios are more open.

In fact, scenario #10 (which for every genre runs as "Use any of the above scenarios with any three characters from your list") allows you to ignore all suggested character assignations and if you like, you can use that several times and so just bypass the whole thing. The assignations are there to give you ideas you might not otherwise have had and add spice to the challenge.

If you want to write romance but only hetero romance, here's keys to avoid same-sex pairings:

Romance het key for six characters:

If 4, 2, 6 = A, then

5, 3, 1 = B.

Romance het key for ten characters:

If 4, 1, 6, 10, 9 = A, then

2, 8, 3, 5, 7 = B.

After some of the scenarios there will be bracketed suggestions for the subgenre, but they are just suggestions, and your story might take the initial scenario in a completely different direction.

Edit: You can now also select the genre HORROR.

Since I'm not on dreamwidth, I'll sign up here =)

You Shuu

Hmm, I’d like to go for fantasy here but I’m not too sure if it’s too close to the original series or not. Saiunkoku is set in a fictional empire, so it has an Emperor and court officials, but it doesn’t have anything like magic/mythical beings/vampires etc. I generally wouldn’t classify it as fantasy, but it depends on whether the prompts for fantasy include things that cross over into that historical realm.

If I can’t have Fantasy, I’ll take Western.

Sent! :)

Alternate reality is covered under fantasy unfortunately, so I sent you the Western list.

Awesome! Just a quick question, do we do number 10 (any characters for an earlier prompt) AND the original prompt, or number 10 in place of the original prompt?

Either way. You could, say, write the first 8 prompts just as they are, then combine two of the first 8 to write #9, and then write any of the others again as #10. So yeah, to get to full ten scenarios written one would have to be used twice (thrice if you count #9). But it's not necessary to write them all, and any plot can be written as many times as you like.

Big Damn Heroes

I will absolutely never finish this, but I have a burning desire to see the prompts at least!

1. Angel
2. Charles Gunn
3. Cordelia Chase
4. Faith Lehane
5. Krevlorneswrath
6. Lilah Morgan
7. Lindsey McDonald
8. Spike
9. Wesley Wyndham-Pryce
10. Winifred Burkle/Illyria

And being masochistically curious, I'll throw in a set of Discworld Minor Characters That Got Painfully Little Screen Time:

1. Rufus Drumknott
2. Ptraci
3. Pretty Butterfly
4. Andre
5. Lacrimosa de Magpyr
6. Jonathan Teatime
7. Inigo Skimmer
8. Myria LeJean
9. Christine Clogston
10. Perspicacia Tick

I think Crime/Thriller for this one. I'm at ekaterina.nightswraith@gmail.com, thanks so much!

Cool! :D Sending! Oh, but I do wish you'd do a couple, too... The Discworld characters really need more love.
